Open work permit
Usually, the work permit is closed, which means it was issued to work for a specific employer. But there is another type of work permit which is called open work permits.
An open work permit is not specific for the job or an employer and does not require LMIA.

If the foreign worker is highly skilled and has six months of work permit, the spouse (Husband or wife) in some cases might be eligible for an open work permit in Canada. In an open work permit, the job is not specified, and the worker does not need LMIA from the government. Moreover, his children can have a study permit for continuing education in Canada.
Exceptions
Having a work permit is not a requirement for everyone to work in Canada. For example, foreign representative and their family members, artists, sportspersons, public speakers, judges, etc. are exempted from the Canadian work permit.
Work in Quebec
Workers in Quebec need to apply for a CAQ to apply for a work permit. Furthermore, a worker in Quebec might be expected from having a new LMIA in order to renew his work permit if he received a CSQ from the government of Quebec ( CSQ is a nomination form permanent residency) and he will continue working in Quebec.
Work permit extension
To renew the work permit, the worker should apply 30 days before the expiry date of the previous work permit.
Before applying for an extension or renewal of a work permit, your employer should apply for a new Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Service Canada (ESDS). This includes showing a new job offer by the employer in Canada and paying the compliance fees.
